Esta provincia tiene por capital a la ciudad de La Oroya, que se encuentra a 125 Km. de la ciudad de Huancayo y a 3,755 msnm. Considerada como centro metalúrgico de importancia para la economía del Perú y "Capital Metalúrgica del País". Puede diferenciarse marcadamente La Oroya Vieja y La Oroya Nueva. Cuenta con los baños termales de Yauli.
